An indicator of a performance's triumph is its haul of Tony Awards, and the remarkable production has a good number of. From 14 nominations it got for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. In Anais Mitchell's reshaping of a Hellenic legend, Eurydice is shown as a young woman adept in coping on her own in a world characterized by unpredictability, even in climate. Meanwhile, Orpheus is a ardent singer-songwriter brimming with emotions. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into unthinking drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, and aided by his melodious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his abode.
The cast is efficient, comprising only 13 members, who remain on center stage for the bulk of the show. The chorus consists of five cast members, who lend their voices and dance in the background to boost the vigor of the songs. Present in the cast the 3 Fates, combining singing, conversation, and interaction with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all with the exception of the drummer are seen on stage. The central protagonists encompass the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
