In Anais Mitchell's reinterpretation of a ancient Greek legend, Eurydice is presented as a young woman skilled in surviving on her own in a world filled with unpredictability, even in weather conditions. Meanwhile, Orpheus is a ardent singer-songwriter filled with feelings. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, and aided by his melodious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he achieves bringing her back to his dwelling.
The cast is small, comprising only 13 members, who stay on the forefront for the most of the performance. The ensemble consists of 5 cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to heighten the energy of the songs. Present in the cast the three Fates, who sing, converse, and interact with the characters. The complete seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all except the drummer are on display on stage. The main characters embody the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
Entertainment Weekly showered accolades on the Broadway rendition, commenting, “When it comes to tales as ancient as time, the narratives of Greek mythology rank among the best, those epic stories of gods and mortals that have been recounted for millennia, inspiring countless adaptations. However, there's something remarkably contemporary and fresh about the way those stories - those ancient ballads, those poignant ballads - are delivered in Hadestown. As it premieres on Broadway, this voyage to the realm of the dead feels like a newly conceived creation.”
