The talented Anaïs Mitchell wrote the music, lyrics, and book for the musical Hadestown. It tells a modernized version of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a youthful woman in need of sustenance, goes to work in a grim industrial depiction of the Greek underworld to escape poverty and the biting cold. Her beau Orpheus, a penniless singer-songwriter, undertakes on a mission to save her.
In its debut Broadway launch, the musical garnered 14 Tony Awards nominations, securing eight coveted accolades. It achieved itself the desired designation of ‘Best Musical,’ bringing immense joy to the ardent fans. The spectacle premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019, garnering commendation.
