An indicator of a performance's triumph is its count of Tony Awards, and Hadestown has several. From 14 nominations it earned for the 2019 Tony Awards, the show clinched eight victories, including the much-coveted title of Best Musical. Moreover, the production was honored with accolades for its mesmerizing music composed by David Mitchell, the skillful direction of Rachel Chavkin, the standout performance by André De Shields, the creative scenic design, the impressive sound design, the expert lighting design, and the skillful orchestrations.
In Anais Mitchell's reimagining of a Hellenic tale, Eurydice is depicted as a young woman adept in navigating on her own in a world where unpredictability, even in climate. Conversely, Orpheus is a fervent singer-songwriter brimming with emotions. Upon their first meeting, Eurydice is lured into an underworld factory, in which Hades transforms his workers into mindless drones.
Orpheus embarks on a journey to retrieve her, assisted by his melodious tunes and Persephone (Hades' wife), he succeeds in bringing her back to his dwelling.
The cast is small, made up of merely 13 members, who stay put on the forefront for the bulk of the performance. The chorus consists of five cast members, who provide their singing and dancing in the background to heighten the vitality of the songs. Included among the actors the three Fates, combining singing, conversation, and interaction with the characters. The entire seven-piece band for "Hadestown" plays the entire show while all with the exception of the drummer are seen on stage. The primary figures embody the deities Hades and Persephone, as well as Orpheus and his beloved Eurydice.
