Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s modern mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drawing up the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to decorated stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the duo polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would progress from its humble beginnings to a coveted place on Broadway and other beloved stages in London and Canada, making it a world-wide success.
Join us in the Underworld, where Hades runs a profitable but harsh factory called Hadestown. The exhausted workers perform their endless duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their independence. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice take pleasure in a blossoming romance above ground, despite the tribulations of winter’s famine.
Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter sharpens above-ground longings. Eurydice, affected by insatiable yearnings and influenced by the tempting song of the Fates, longs for the salvation Hadestown promises. She eventually finds herself in the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for survival.
Her contract snares her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an embittered Hades, pressured by his dissatisfied workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades force Eurydice to do his bidding for all time?
In 2019, the musical earned 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its dazzling achievements and full-house audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a contemporary era while combining classical elements from the past.
